Krajina Křivoklátska je pestrá i díky skalám vzniklých v různých dobách, od dob mořem bičovaných starohor, trilobity protkanými vodami prvohor, opeřenými drahy druhohor, bohaté prostředí třetihor s jejich voňavými květinami a čtvrtohor s jejich přesuny druhů vázaných na chladné a teplé výkyvy. Křivoklátsko má však i svou lidskou historii.
Jaké rostliny, houby a zvířata můžete na Křivoklátsku najít? Proč jako lidé jasně vnímáme červenou barvu plodů v zeleném pozadí lesa a dokážeme rukou držet nástroje? Kdo obývá doupné stromy? Introduction: The Tale of the Forest
The forest is an incredibly diverse environment, as evidenced by the hornbeam oak forests, lime-beech woodlands, and various forest layers, from small herbs and seedlings to shrubs, multi-stemmed trees, towering trees, and primeval giants. The landscape of Křivoklátsko, The Forest of Crooked Logs, is diverse due to the rocks formed at different times, from the times of the Proterozoic seas and the trilobite-infested waters of the Paleozoic era to the feathered dinosaurs of the Mesozoic era. It is enriched by the environment of the Tertiary period with its fragrant flowers and the Quaternary era with its species migrations driven by temperature fluctuations. However, forests also have their human history.
What plants, fungi, and animals can you find in Křivoklátsko region? Why do humans perceive the red color of fruits against the green backdrop of the forest and have the ability to grasp tools with their hands? Who inhabits hollow trees? What are the Forest’s loužky and pleše, where a significant portion of the following stories unfolds? What does knowledge of nature bring to us?
Kapitola první: Nečekané setkání
Na jaře roku 1292 přichází směrem od řeky tajemný muž, který pod cestovním pláštěm skrývá spisy z dávných dob. Mezi nimi je jeden nadepsaný slovy De rerum natura, který tvrdí, že je svět tvořen z atomů. Muž sám je na útěku, a když prochází kolem hradu Křivoklátu a následně rušným Městcem, minulost se ho chystá dostihnout. Zachráněn jen však tajemnou dívkou Hanou, která zdejší kraj před deseti lety zachránila před zničením.
Kdo je onen tajemný muž a co v křivoklátských lesích pohledává? S jakými strachy on sám i dívka Hana zápasí? Pomůže jim poznání přírodních zákonitostí vyrovnat se se strachy a s minulostí, jak tvrdili antičtí atomisté?
Chapter One: An Unexpected Encounter
In the spring of the year 1292, a mysterious man approaches from the river, concealing ancient scrolls beneath his travel cloak. Among them is one labeled with the words “De rerum natura”, which claims that the world is composed of atoms. The man is on the run, and as he passes by Křivoklát Castle and subsequently the bustling village of Městec, his past is closing in on him. He is saved only by a mysterious girl named Hana, who saved this land from destruction ten years ago.
Who is this mysterious man, and what is he seeking in the forests of Křivoklátsko? What fears do both he and Hana grapple with? Will their understanding of the natural laws help them confront their fears and their past, as the ancient atomists believed?
Kapitola druhá: Čtení z krajiny
Vysoko v kopcích na Vrbovým potokem je skrytá osada, do níž Hana uvádí tajemného mnicha, který si říká Aldemo. Lidé jsou ohromení antickými vědomostmi, které směsi spisů obsahují, nicméně najednou je Hana nucena osadu opustit a schovat se ve svém domově, odkud má výhled na vzkvétající městečko Rakovník a trosky Správního hradu. Mnich se snaží Haně pomoci zbavit se přízraku jejího někdejšího trýznitele, který je jen v její hlavě a který ji nutí setrvávat na opuštěném místě.
Aldemo se dozví více o její minulosti, o tom, že kdysi byla dcerou hutníka a dnes že lidem pomáhá svými bylinami, které pěstuje a sbírá v okolí. Hana cítí, že ji dávné myšlenky a poznání přírody dokážou zbavit zhoubných představ i ukázat bolestivé vzpomínky, které musí všechny znovu prožít. Kraj o tom zpívá písně, zlaté světlo v jejích očích ji nutí pozorovat, zkoumat a přemýšlet.
Nakonec k ní dorazí její dávný přítel Litorad, kterého kdysi sama zachránila. Podaří se Aldemovi Haně ukázat cestu k uzdravení? Získá Hana zpět své pravé já, o které byla násilně připravena? Pomůže naoplátku ona mnichovi pohlédnout do minulosti? Jaké další příběhy dokáže z kraje kolem své studánky přečíst?
Chapter Two: The Reading from the Land
High in the hills by the Willow Stream lies a hidden settlement where Hana leads the mysterious monk who calls himself Aldemo. The people there are amazed by the ancient knowledge contained within the scrolls’ writings. However, Hana is suddenly forced to leave the settlement and take refuge in her home, which overlooks the flourishing town of Rakovník and the ruins of the Administrative Castle. The monk tries to help Hana rid herself of the wraith of her former tormentor, which exists only in her mind and compels her to remain in the abandoned place.
Aldemo learns more about her past, that she was once the daughter of a metallurgist and now helps people with the herbs she cultivates and gathers from the surrounding area. Hana feels that ancient thoughts and knowledge of nature can free her from destructive fantasies and reveal painful memories that everyone must relive. The landscape sings songs about it, and the golden light in her eyes forces her to observe, explore, and reflect.
In the end, her old friend Litorad, whom she once saved, arrives. Can Aldemo show Hana the path to healing? Will Hana regain her true self, from which she was forcibly estranged? Will she, in turn, help the monk confront his own past? What other stories can she read from the land around her spring?

Do vesnice na jižním okraji Křivoklátska přijíždí bojovník s bronzovým mečem, který se chystá místní obyvatele získat na svou stranu, aby mu pomohli v blízké bitvě. In the village on the southern edge of Křivoklát, a warrior with a bronze sword arrives, intending to win over the local residents to his side to assist him in an upcoming battle. Instead, he decides to investigate the strange disappearance of the local prince, who vanished near the river in the nearly uninhabited forests. Will he succeed? Will his journey lead him to the Křivoklát promontory? Will he encounter figures from ancient tales that are intertwined with the very beginnings of the landscape?

Daleko na severu dojde k rozhodující bitvě, jejíž ozvěny spícího Ungnise vytrhnou ze spánku. Far in the north, a decisive battle takes place, the echoes of which awaken the dormant Ungnis. In the following days, he traverses the Forest’s landscape in a state of turmoil, trying to overcome the ghosts of the past and the guilt that lies deep within him. In his journey, he is aided by visions of ancient gods who eventually reveal to him what he has long been trying to suppress.

The Horn of Plenty
In the late Bronze Age, the Křivoklát promontory was experiencing unprecedented activity. The most beautiful of the girls was chosen to go to the otherworld to beseech Lady of the Dawn for abundance in crops. A procession headed along the river to accompany the girl Arkuna to the Fallen Castle, where she was to be sacrificed. However, a boy named Wena, who loves Arkuna above all else and is convinced that Arkuna and everyone around her were simply deluded, attempts to prevent this. Will he succeed? Will Arkuna ultimately come to appreciate the value of life and not succumb to vain illusions?

The Celtic Town
After the winter solstice festivities on the Devil’s Rock, young Meduwid is suddenly overwhelmed by an unexpected anxiety, which culminates in a strange encounter with an old man who calls himself the Lord of Time. By the fire in the middle of the snowy land, he sees a magical cauldron and a staff that has the power to change the seasons. Meduwid loses consciousness, only to awaken during the summer solstice when people at the Stradonice hillfort are beginning the harvest. Could the unusual vision be a result of a tainted mead? Will Meduwid gain the ability to compose songs that will make him famous throughout the region?

Nedaleko řecké delfské věštírny rozbijí Galatové neboli Keltové vojenský tábor. Přední z bojovníků, jenž je obdařen titulem Brennos, ztratil už veškeré naděje na vítězství. Poslední kapka přijde ve chvíli, kdy zrádný Luernos otráví pivo, víno a medovinu. Keltští bojovníci se v křečovitém záchvatu téměř všichni povraždí navzájem, což Brenna donutí Luerna pronásledovat. Nenávist ho pak dovede až na hranice křivoklátských lesů, na místo nedaleko dnešních Mšeckých Žehrovic, kde se snaží ze spiknutí obvinit zdejšího zlatookého velmože Margewida. Je Margewid skutečně za smrt Brennových lidí zodpovědný nebo je v tomto případě nevinný? Jaké tajemství ukrývá?
The Bitter Memories
Not far from the Greek Oracle of Delphi, the Galatians, also known as Celts, set up a military camp. Their foremost warrior, bearing the title Brennos, has lost all hope of victory. The final blow comes when treacherous Luernos poisons the beer, wine, and mead. In a convulsive frenzy, the Celtic warriors nearly slaughter each other, which compels Brennos to pursue Luernos. Hatred leads him to the edges of the Forest of Crooked Logs, near what is now Mšecké Žehrovice, where he tries to accuse the local golden-eyed lord Margewid of conspiracy. Is Margewid truly responsible for the deaths of Brennos’s people, or is he innocent in this case? What secret does he hide?

Ukryt v broznovém kotlíku tento poklad vaří písně jako nějaké směsi, které prostupují celým Křivoklátskem. Znemožní moc pokladu komukoliv od přelomu letopočtu po následujících tisíc let zakládat v prostoru hvozdu větší sídla? Jaká byla motivace a jaké jiné představy vedly Dónovala a ostatní k ukrytí pokladu? Jaký byl jeho osud? Co se stalo s křivoklátskými lesy, když poslední zbytky jeho ochranné moci o letním slunovratu roku 1771 zmizely?
The Golden Treasure
After unsuccessful expeditions seeking help against invaders, the Stradonice lord Dónoval decides, along with his most loyal followers, including the renowned Vlatíkodegos and the enigmatic Desna, to offer a treasure of immeasurable value to the gods. Hidden in a bronze cauldron, this treasure simmers like a brew that permeates the entire Křivoklátsko region with its songs. Does the power of this treasure prevent anyone from establishing larger settlements within the Forest since the turn of the millennium for the next thousand years? What was the motivation and what other ideas led Dónoval and the others to hide the treasure? What was its fate? What happened to the Křivoklátsko’s forests when the last remnants of its protective power disappeared on the summer solstice of 1771?
Kapitola třetí: Poznejte sami sebe
Nastala noc. Hana míří spolu s Litoradem ke Skryjským jezírkům, odkud se chce vydat navštívit místo ze svého snu. Slyší písně zlatého pokladu, podle růstu stromů a tvaru kopců dokáže nevědomě poznat, kde lidé kdysi žili, a pochopit i skutečnost, jak vlastně život na zemi kdysi před miliardami let vznikl a proč vlastně existují dvě pohlaví. Hana se stále snaží vyrovnat se svými vzpomínkami, zatímco je stále blíže k Litoradovi, který ji nabízí vidinu budoucnosti v učení u křivoklátského lékaře.
Hana myslí na svého otce a na to, jak by chtěl, aby šla za svým snem. Co všechno Hana prožije, jaké vzpomínky ukrývá a co se dozví o světě kolem? Pozná sama sebe? Bude jí Litorad oporou?
Chapter Three: Know Thyself
The night has fallen. Hana, accompanied by Litorad, heads towards the Skryje Lakes to visit the place from her dream. She hears the songs of the golden treasure, and based on the growth of the trees and the shape of the hills, she can instinctively discern where people once lived. She also grasps the reality of how life on Earth came into being billions of years ago and why there are two sexes. Hana continues to grapple with her memories as she grows closer to Litorad, who offers her the prospect of a future that includes learning from the Křivoklát physician.
Hana thinks of her father and how he would want her to follow her dreams. What experiences will Hana go through, what memories does she hold, and what will she learn about the world around her? Will she discover her true self? Will Litorad be her support?

Každý národ má svou pověst o původu a Čechové nejsou žádnou výjimkou. Jaký je vlastně náš původ? Leží hlubinách v baltoslovanské a indoevropské rodiny? Nad křivoklátskou ostrožnou stojí sochy bohů, které mají spolu s prvními osadníky ustoupit představám a moci knížete Boleslava.
The First Settlers
Every nation has its legend of origin, and the Czechs are no exception. What is our true origin? Does it lie in the depths of the Balto-Slavic and Indo-European family? Statues of gods stand above the Křivoklát promontory, which, along with the first settlers, must yield to the ideas and power of Duke Boleslav.

V době své vlády byl kníže Jaromír podle kronikáře Kosmy unesen na vrch Velíz, místo dávné pohanské svatyně, kde později vzniklo středověké probošství. Jaromír chystá lstivý plán, jak se zbavit starého Kochana a všech jeho věrných spolu s dávnými obřady, které místní ještě uchovávají a při kterých je vyžadována účast samotného knížete. The Ceremony at the Hill of Velíz (retelling of the original legend)
During his reign, according to the chronicler Cosmas, Duke Jaromír was abducted at the Velíz hill, the site of an ancient pagan sanctuary that later became a medieval provostry. Jaromír devises a cunning plan to rid himself of the old Kochan and all his loyal followers, along with the ancient rituals still practiced by the locals, which require the presence of the duke himself. Will Jaromír manage to surprise the people of Velíz and cut down their sacred centuries-old oak tree? Or, conversely, will Jaromír and his retinue fall into a trap of their own making?

V lesích nedaleko budoucího Týřova nalezne starý Jaroslav zraněnou těhotnou ženu. V jejích očích spatří zlatý záblesk, který ho vyděsí a způsobí vidiny dávných vzpomínek, kdy jako dítě přišel daleko na severu o rodiče a později o svou milou. Probudí se až později ve své chatrči, kde ho čeká ona tajemná žena jménem Radoslava se svým bratrancem jménem Lado. Jaroslav nakonec sebere zbytky odvahy a rozhodne se jim pomoci zbavit kraj loupežníků, mezi nimiž je i Jaroslavův nevlastní bratr, který je za smrt jeho blízkých přímo zodpovědný.
Run No More
In the woods near the future Týřov Castle, old Jaroslav finds an injured pregnant woman. In her eyes, he sees a golden flame that frightens him and triggers visions of distant memories when, as a child, he lost his parents and later his beloved. He wakes up later in his hut, where he is greeted by the mysterious woman named Radoslava and her cousin named Lado. Jaroslav eventually gathers the remnants of his courage and decides to help them rid the region of bandits, including Jaroslav’s step-brother, who is directly responsible for the deaths of his loved ones.

Dýma the Fire Dragon (retelling of the original legend)
The charcoal burners from today’s Stříbrný luh advise Lado, Radoslava, Jaroslav, and several other warriors to seek in their visions the fiery dragon Dýma, who soars in the mist high above the river and guards powerful spells. Only by doing so, they say, can they defeat the bandits, their sorcerer, and their leader Kazimír. Will they succeed in outsmarting the dragon and compelling it to destroy the sorcerer’s protective spells? Will they rid the region of the bandits, as commanded by Duke Oldřich?
Jezdci z Červeného ostrova (převyprávění původní pověsti)
Drach je dvorní umělec ze Zbečna. Poslední dobou musí přihlížet tomu, jak je zoufalému knížeti Břetislavovi II. jasné, že nikdy nezíská královskou korunu jako jeho otec. Nepomáhá ani upevňování moci, ani tažení proti posledním pohanským představám, které by snad v očích německé šlechty posunulo české země blíže křesťanskému světu. Kníže proto povolá bohaté a vlivné hosty z cizích krajin, kteří však v okolí Zbečna rabují a škodí.
Drach se nakonec rozhodne spojit s posledními pohanskými bojovníky, kteří mu slíbili proti knížeti pomoc, pokud se jeho poprava odehraje během dvanácti nocí kolem zimního slunovratu. Podaří se Drachovi plán uskutečnit a pomstít tak smrt jeho bratra? Nebo je kníže naopak na spiknutí připraven? Co tajemný člen knížecí družiny, mladý Áine Lork, který je přístupem knížete také znepokojen? Zasadí rozhodující ránu?
The Riders from the Red Island (retelling of the original legend)
Drach is a court performer from Zbečno. Lately, he has had to witness the desperation of Duke Břetislav II, who realizes that he will never obtain the royal crown like his father. Strengthening his power and campaigns against the last pagan beliefs in the hopes of winning the favor of the German nobility do not seem to bring him closer to the Christian world. Therefore, the duke eventually summons wealthy and influential guests from foreign lands. However, these guests are causing havoc and harm in the vicinity of Zbečno.
Drach ultimately decides to align himself with the last pagan warriors who have promised him assistance against the duke if his execution takes place within twelve nights around the winter solstice. Will Drach’s plan succeed in avenging his brother’s death? Or is the duke prepared for the conspiracy? What about the mysterious member of the duke’s retinue, the young Áine Lork, who is also troubled by the duke’s actions? Will he strike the decisive blow?

Po smrti krále Přemysla se správce hradu na dnešním vrchu Hlavačově rozhodne využít příležitosti a pomstít se všem pánům z okolí, kteří ho na hradě Křivoklátě kdysi obviňovali ze zkažených mravů. Zároveň se rozhodne s pomocí braniborských žoldnéřů získat co nejvíc kořisti pro sebe a obnovit slávu svého sídla. Rovněž nechá zabít jednoho hutníka, otce dívky, kterou kdysi unesl a která mu odmítá poslušnost. Místo pokoření ovšem dívka Hana sebere zbytky sil a ze správního hradu v nestřežený okamžik uteče, aby místní obyvatelsvo trápené kořistěním a hladem sjednotila a obrátila proti správci, jehož úkolem bylo je ochraňovat a ne týrat.
Povede se Haně a ostatním braniborské žoldnéře vyhnat a správní hrad dobýt? Nastane v lesích křivoklátských opět klid a mír? Jsou vzpomínky na Hanu stále vepsané v křivoklátské krajině?
The Tale of Hana (retelling of the original legend)
After the death of King Přemysl, the steward of the castle on today’s Hlavačov Hill decides to seize the opportunity to exact revenge on all the lords in the vicinity who once accused him of corrupt morals at Křivoklát Castle. At the same time, he decides to use mercenaries from Brandenburg to plunder as much loot as possible for himself and restore the glory of his stronghold. He also orders the killing of a metallurgist, the father of the girl he once abducted, and who now refuses to obey him. Instead of submission, however, the girl Hana gathers her remaining strength and escapes from the Administrative Castle in an unguarded moment, to unite the local population, tormented by plunder and hunger, and turn them against the steward, whose task was to protect them, not to torment them.
Will Hana and other people manage to drive out the Branderburgian mercenaries and capture the Administrative Castle? Will peace return to the forests of Křivoklátsko? Are the memories of Hana still etched into the Forest’s landscape?

O letním slunovratu roku 1292 míří Hana lesem k troskám Správního hradu, kde se chce konečně se svými trápeními vyrovnat. Během dalších dní se pak společně s Litoradem a s lidmi z osady zúčastní svatojánských slavností a vymyslí bylinné směsi, které bude chtít předat lidem v okolí, aby se se svými tělesnými a duševními trápeními také vypořádali. Podaří se Haně s ošklivým přízrakem někdejšího správce skoncovat? Jaké obrazy pak spatří po cestě kolem hradu Křivoklátu? Jak své směsi pojmenuje?
Chapter Four: The Brews of the Forest of Crooked Logs
On the summer solstice of 1292, Hana heads through the forest towards the ruins of the Administrative Castle, where she intends to finally come to terms with her troubles. Over the following days, along with Litorad and the people from the settlement, she participates in the midsummer festivities and concocts herbal brews. She plans to offer these brews to the people in the surrounding area to help them cope with their physical and mental ailments more easily. Will Hana be able to confront the ugly specter of the former steward? What visions will she then witness on her journey around Křivoklát Castle? What names will she give to her brews?
Kapitola pátá: O půvabu slunce a květin
Uprostřed křivoklátských lesů Hana prožívá radost, jakou už dlouhá léta nezažila. Nedaleko své studánky spatří vidění, která už nejsou děsivá a plná přízraků, ale vlídná a plná květin a síly slunce. Zjeví se jí zlatovlasý Mocný pán, Květinová dívka úsvitu a jejich zlatovlasá dcera. Hana pozná, že se jedná o postavy z dávných příběhů, které jí pomáhají poznat přírodní děje. Chapter Five: Of the Charm of the Sun and Flowers
In the midst of the forests of Křivoklátsko, Hana experiences joy like she hasn’t in years. Near her spring, she sees visions that are no longer frightening and filled with specters, but gentle and full of flowers and the power of the sun. The Mighty Lord, the Flower Maiden of the Dawn, and their golden-haired daughter appear to her. Hana recognizes them as characters from ancient stories who help her understand the natural processes. She realizes that those elements, the atoms that Aldemo had read to her about, are formed in the cores of distant stars. Eventually, along with Litorad, she heads to the abandoned Fallen Castle, where they discuss their future together.

The Brew: The Robin and The Green Woodpecker (of the origin of herbalists from Branov)
In the summer of 1292, Hana decides to journey to the Mokřinka Hill near today’s Branov to deliver some of her herbal brews to an older woman. These brews will help the woman’s husband and grandson recover from a lingering illness. At the same time, Hana shares brief stories connected to these brews. Later, the woman will establish the renowned lineage of herbalists from Branov.

Starý převozník je nespokojený se svou prací a proklíná zdejší místo i lesy kolem Kouřimecké rybárny. Když se mu zjeví tajemný obchodník, převozník se rozhodne mu vyjevit své přání, aby zde nedaleko jeho domu stál most, který by spojoval oba břehy řeky. Převozník by pak jen mohl vybírat tučné poplatky a nemusel se starat o převážení pocestných. Nečekal však, jaké důsledky bude setkání s tajemným obchodníkem v podobě jakéhosi myslivce či dávného lovce mít.
Co může znamenat dunění, které se ozve uprostřed noci? Co převozník obchodníkovi na oplátku slíbil, pokud mu most postaví? A proč se z přírodního hlediska neobyčejně hodnotná skála na protějším břehu, která před stovkami milionů let vznikla podmořskou sopečnou činností, dnes nazývá Čertova?
The Bridge Across the River (retelling of the original legend)
An old ferryman is dissatisfied with his work and curses the place and the forests around the fishery of Kouřimec. When a mysterious trader appears before him, the ferryman decides to reveal his wish: he wants a bridge to be built near his home, spanning both banks of the river. With such a bridge, he could collect hefty tolls and wouldn’t have to worry about ferrying travelers. However, he did not anticipate the consequences of his encounter with the mysterious trader, who takes the form of a gamekeeper or an ancient hunter.
What could the thundering sound in the middle of the night signify? What did the ferryman promise the trader in return for building the bridge? And why, from a geological perspective, is the exceptionally valuable rock on the opposite bank, which formed hundreds of millions of years ago through submarine volcanic activity, now called the Devil’s Rock?

Hana desires to share her brews with the people in the vicinity, fearing the cold, unrest, and diseases that may return in the future. Therefore, she decides to visit an old, sick soldier at the foot of Velíz, to whom she imparts her brews along with stories and recommendations that will help heal both him and his daughter. Later, the daughter will establish the renowned healing lineage from Kublov.

Po dni stráveném povídáním s rybáři odpočívá starý hajný uvnitř Kouřimecké myslivny, když tu venku uslyší povyk svých psů. Když vyjde na zastřešené zápraží, spatří, že se schyluje k pořádné bouři. Po chvíli mu začne bouře připomínat ryk honů a štvanic, a proto samým pobavením začne údajným hlasům odpovídat. Vyděsí se až ve chvíli, když začne rozeznávat slova a spatří mlhou zahalené postavy, které se uprostřed větrného víru zničehonic zjeví. O jaké postavy se jedná? Jedná se o skutečné lidi, sedláky a císaře z dávných časů? Jaké poselství hajnému předají? Když se bouře přežene, co se stane s okolím myslivny a samotným hajným?
The Wild Hunt (retelling of the original legend)
After spending a day chatting with fishermen, the old forester rests inside the lodge of Kouřimec when he hears the barking of his dogs outside. When he goes out onto the covered front porch, he notices that a heavy storm is approaching. After a while, the storm’s roar reminds him of hunting cries and clamor, so he starts responding to the supposed voices in jest. He gets frightened only when he begins to distinguish words and sees figures shrouded in mist suddenly appearing amidst the swirling wind. Who are these figures? Are they real people, peasants, and emperors from ancient times? What message do they convey to the forester? When the storm passes, what happens to the surroundings of the lodge and the forester himself?

Hana offers them her herbal brews along with stories and advice to help the children. The boy and the girl eventually establish a powerful lineage of herbalists from Sýkořice.

The Cycle of the Year
Young Jaromír is always lost in his thoughts. Petite Anežka is his complete opposite – perpetually cheerful and carefree, yet deeply in love with Jaromír. After the May Day celebrations, both of them venture into the forest near Broumy, where they confess their love once again beneath the small rocks. Anežka’s presence sparks Jaromír’s imagination, leading him to discover the customs and festivities that his ancestors celebrated throughout the year. Eventually, he glimpses an image of a girl with a golden gaze, the guardian of the forests of Křivoklátsko. Jaromír overcomes his fear of the future and the increasing demand for charcoal that threatens to destroy the forests. What does Jaromír remember from his distant uncle, the poet Erben, whom he visited in Prague? Where does Anežka come from, and what special abilities does she possess?
Kapitola šestá: Lékaři, hutníci a děje přírody
Hana je díky Litoradovi konečně přijata do učení ke křivoklátskému lékaři, panu Vilémovi. Po první zkoušce, kdy se jí podaří poradit synovi Hynka z Dubé, vyrazí spolu s lékařem na sběr bylin. Hana se lékaři svěří se svými sny zahrnujícími chlad, nepokoje a náboženské války, které mají v následujících letech přijít. Lékař Vilém jí vysvětlí, že budoucnost není nikdy stejná jako minulost, že ty nepokoje před deseti lety a kruté zimy způsobující hladomor by neměly ovlivňovat její současné štěstí. Hana si vzpomene na své dětství, na lipové květy u řeky, v nichž prožívala přítomnost své maminky, na otce, který ji měl rád a daroval jí přívěsek s olivínem, ukrývajícím tajemství počátku všeho života. Vzpomínky už přestávají být bolestivé, naopak na povrch vyplouvají ty krásné. Podaří se Haně na křivoklátského lékaře zapůsobit? Bude se mít ráda taková, jaká je?
Chapter Six: Physicians, Metallurgists, and Natural Phenomena
Thanks to Litorad, Hana is finally accepted as an apprentice to the Křivoklát physician, Mr. Vilém. After passing her first test by successfully advising Hynek of Dubá’s son, she sets out with the physician to gather herbs. Hana confides in the physician about her dreams, which involve cold, unrest, and religious wars that are predicted to occur in the coming years. Physician Vilém explains to her that the future is never the same as the past, and that the unrest of ten years ago and the harsh winters causing famine should not affect her current happiness. Hana remembers her childhood, the lime blossoms by the river in which she felt her mother’s presence, her father’s love, and the pendant with olivine that holds the secret of the beginning of all life. Memories are no longer painful but instead, beautiful memories surface. Will Hana be able to make an impression on the Křivoklát physician? Will she learn to love herself just as she is?
O lišce a hadovi
Začákem předjaří, kdy lidé na prvních rozkvetlých vrbových proutcích schovávali svým dětem sladkosti, se dvě malé děti vydají pronásledovat tajemnou lišku. Běží kolem potoka i po okolních kopcích, až se dostanou na vrchol, kde se přenesou do tajemné říše zlatých jablek. Tam je zlatovlasý Mocný pán spolu s Květinovou dívkou varuje před povodní, která teď, na konci takzvané malé doby ledové, jejich údolí zaplaví a která zároveň zničí křivoklátské železárny. Řekne jim, že si údolí nárokují bohové z dávných představ. Tajemný had se zlatou korunkou je zavede zpět domů. Jedná se o skutečný zážitek nebo jde jen o sen? Jak se zachovají rodiče dětí, když si tajemné poselství vyslechnou?
Of the Fox and the Snake
At the beginning of early spring, when people hid sweets for their children on the first blooming willow twigs, two young children set out to chase a mysterious fox. They ran along a creek and over the surrounding hills until they reached the summit, where they were transported to a mysterious realm of golden apples. There, the golden-haired Mighty Lord and the Flower Maiden warn them about a flood that would soon inundate their valley at the end of the so-called Little Ice Age. This flood will also destroy the ironworks of Křivoklátsko. They tell them their valley is claimed by gods from ancient tales. A mysterious snake with a golden crown then leads them back home. Was this a real experience or just a dream? How will the children’s parents react when they hear the mysterious message?
Železo a moc
V srdci Křivoklátska padne kvůli výrobě dřevěného uhlí pro místní železárny jeden prastarý velikán. Jedná se o starý buk, který se pomocí houbových vláken spojoval s celým okolím a který svou širokou korunou stínil a ochraňoval lesní půdu. Nedlouho poté navštíví horního radu Mayera tajemný černovlasý muž, který ho vtíravými otázkami přivede na okraj zoufalství. Nakonec mu muž ukáže úlomek z pokáceného buku, což horního radu donutí přehodnotit jeho život.
Odstoupí ještě téhož roku horní rada z vedení podniku? Přijdou povodně, které zničí místní výrobu železa a zachrání tak křivoklátské lesy? Jakou roli sehraje kamenné uhlí? Co se stane o sto let později nedaleko místa, kde byl starý buk pokácen?
The Iron and the Power
In the heart of Křivoklátsko, an ancient giant falls victim to the production of charcoal for the local ironworks. This ancient giant is an old beech tree that was connected to its surroundings through mycelial networks and whose broad canopy shaded and protected the forest floor. Shortly after, a mysterious dark-haired man visits the head of the ironworks, Mayer, and through persistent questioning, brings him to the brink of despair. Eventually, the man shows him a fragment of the felled beech tree, prompting Mayer to reconsider his life.
Will Mayer step down from his position on the board of the company later that year? Will floods come to destroy local iron production, thus saving the Křivoklátsko forests? What role does stone coal play in this story? What happens a hundred years later near the site where the old beech tree was felled?
Zbečenský farář
Jeden malý chlapec pomáhá spolu se svým bratříčkem zbečenskému faráři sloužit mši, k čemuž je přiměl jejich dědeček. Během následné hostiny je pak chlapec neúmyslným svědkem roztržky mezi farářem a jistým maltézským rytířem. Chlapec je později na hradě Křivoklátě farářem pokřtěn, pomáhá s čištěním nezabudické kapličky a s přípravami velké slavnosti ve Zbečně. Během toho pozoruje intriky církevních a politických představitelů, které se na Křivoklátsku s přestávkami odehrávají už od dob prvních českých knížat. Po smrti faráře, kterého měli všichni včetně chlapce rádi a který musel čelit mnoha nátlakům, se chlapec definitivně rozhodne s křesťanstvím, církvemi, řády a podobnými náboženstvími a představami skoncovat.
The Priest of Zbečno
A young boy helps the priest of Zbečno serve a mass along with his little brother, all under the watchful eye of their grandfather. During the subsequent feast, the boy unintentionally witnesses a dispute between the priest and a certain Maltese knight. Later on, the boy is baptized by the priest at Křivoklát Castle and assists in cleaning the chapel in Nezabudice and preparing for a grand celebration in Zbečno. During this time, he observes the intrigues of the church and political figures, which have been unfolding in Křivoklátsko since the days of the first Czech dukes, with breaks in between. After the priest’s death, whom everyone, including the boy, held in high regard, and who had to withstand numerous pressures, the boy ultimately decides to part ways with Christianity, the church, religious orders, and similar beliefs and concepts.

Příběh pojednává o podivných zážitcích, snech a touhách jednoho obyčejného člověka, který oblast kolem hradu Křivoklátu považuje za střed svého světa. Ve svých snech spatří postavy bohů z dávných příběhů, kouzelného jestřába a jelena se zlatými parohy, což ho přiměje se o dávné lidové představy zajímat. Nakonec mu dojde, že se jedná jen o představy, které ho však mají spojit s okolním krajem, jeho přírodou a historií.
One of Many
This story explores the peculiar experiences, dreams, and desires of an ordinary man who regards the area around Křivoklát Castle as the center of his world. In his dreams, he sees figures of gods from ancient stories, a magical hawk, and a deer with golden antlers, which piques his interest in ancient folk beliefs. Ultimately, he comes to realize that these are just fantasies, but he understands that they are meant to connect him with the surrounding landscape, its nature, and history.
Zahrada dětí Ohnivce
Pojednání o důležitosti lesa a přírodní zahrady, které dokáží nejen poskytnout domov tvorům na všech úrovních od malých bylin po vysoké či doupné stromy, ale zároveň jsou zdrojem inspirace a radosti. Lidé krajinu často nevědomky obohacovali zakládáním a opouštěním hradišť, která v terénu zanechala rozmanitá prostředí pro podporu druhové pestrosti. Pojednání se odehrává v okolí Městečka, podhradí Křivoklátu, kde ve středověku bydlel bájný královský Ohnivec a kde se v třetihorách spojovaly dvě veliké řeky. Nakonec je připojeno pár příhod lidí zabývajících se lesními řemesly či novověké boje mezi pytláky a myslivci.
The Garden of the Burner’s Children
This discourse discusses the importance of forests and natural gardens, which not only provide a home for creatures at all levels, from small herbs to tall or hollow trees but also serve as a source of inspiration and joy. People have often inadvertently enriched the landscape by establishing and abandoning hillforts, which have left diverse environments in the terrain to support species diversity. The narrative is set in the vicinity of Městečko, below Křivoklát Castle, where the legendary royal Ohnivec, the burner-executioner, lived in the Middle Ages, and where two great rivers converged during the Tertiary period. Finally, a few stories of people engaged in forestry crafts or modern-day conflicts between poachers and gamekeepers are included.
Jak vznikly příběhy
Lidská mysl vznikla díky potřebě ovládat společenské vztahy v rámci skupiny ve svůj prospěch. Jako taková pak vidí lidské vztahy všude kolem sebe v prostředí, kde ve skutečnosti nejsou, a vytváří tak příběhy a postavy různých duchů a bohů. Některé z těchto příběhů umožnily naším předkům vyhýbat se prostředím se zvýšeným výskytem nemocí, což v průběhu generací naši vrozenou schopnost tvořit a vyprávět příběhy jen posilovalo, neboť ti, co si příběhy nevyprávěli, nepřežili. Svou vlastní osobnost a vědomí sebe sama chápeme v podobě životního příběhu, který má začátek a konec. Mohou postavy z dávných příběhů uprostřed křivoklátských lesů povahu naší mysli odhalit? Jak jsme se my lidé vyvinuli? Odkud pocházíme a proč je důležité si příběhy vyprávět? Je možné náš životní příběh rozbít na jednotlivé části a znovu uspořádat?
How Stories Came to Be
The human mind evolved due to the need to navigate social relationships within a group for one’s benefit. As a result, it often perceives human relationships everywhere in the environment, even where they don’t exist, and creates stories and characters of various spirits and gods. Some of these stories allowed our ancestors to avoid environments with a higher risk of diseases, which over generations only strengthened our innate ability to create and tell stories. Those who didn’t tell stories often did not survive. We understand our own personality and self-awareness in the form of a life story with a beginning and an end. Can characters from ancient stories in the midst of the forests of Křivoklátsko reveal the nature of our mind? How did we as humans evolve? Where do we come from, and why is it important to tell stories? Is it possible to break our life story into individual parts and rearrange it?

Uprostřed léta dorazí na hrad Křivoklát samotný král Václav II., aby oznámil důležitou novinu. Hana pomáhá lékaři Vilémovi s přípravou směsí a mastí, které lidé kupují ve velkém. Křivoklát je přeplněný, lidé se baví a zpívají, zároveň však mají strach, aby je král neposlal na tažení do Polska. Chapter Seven: In the Mind of King Václav
In the midst of summer, King Václav II arrives at Křivoklát Castle to announce an important piece of news. Hana assists the physician Vilém in preparing brews and ointments that people are buying in large quantities. Křivoklát is bustling with activity as people enjoy themselves and sing, but they also fear that the king might send them on a campaign to Poland. Physician Vilém, along with Hana’s help, manages to heal Princess Eliška, and as a token of gratitude, King Václav summons Hana to his room.
What important news does the king have to announce? Will he unsuccessfully try to seduce Hana? Why does he call for a procession to the town of Rakovník and the Administrative Castle? Will Hana and Vilém accompany him? Will a hill be named after her, the hill, where her old house stood? Will Hana finally overcome her fear of the future? What commonality links Hana, King Václav, and the monk Aldemo?
